Experimental Study on Emissions Reduction for a Turbocharged DME Engine using High-pressure Loop EGR and DOC

An experimental study on emissions reduction is conducted on a turbocharged DME engine by means of high-pressure loop exhaust gas recirculation (HP-EGR) and oxidation catalyst converter (DOC). The results indicate that the temperature of inlet air, exhaust gas and fuel consumption are increased, and the inlet air amount is decreased with EGR. EGR shortens the ignition delay period, however, increases the combustion duration. By means of EGR, a substantial reduction in NOx emission without smoke is obtained while the fuel consumption and CO emission are deteriorated, and HC emissions show no remarkable change. HC and CO emissions are significantly reduced by means of DOC. The results of ESC emission test show that the proper fuel delivery advance angle is 3°CA BTDC while DME engine meets the requirements of EURO-IV emissions standards with consideration of fuel consumption.
