Impact of Ethanol Blended Fuel in Spray Characteristics of Piezo-actuated Outward-opening Injector for DISI Engine

In this study, the spray characteristics of piezo-actuated outward-opening injector have been investigated while applied ethanol blended gasoline with different ethanol portion (20%, 50%, and 85% ethanol in volume) as well as pure commercial gasoline firstly. Injection rate has been measured at first; Then Mie scattering macroscopic spray images have been captured in a constant volume chamber as well as planar laser induced fluorescence spray images. A comparative analysis of blended fuels and gasoline sprays regarding injection parameters and spray characteristics is presented. The experimental results show the larger viscosity of ethanol fuel has a relative large impact on the spray characteristics of injection: injection rate was reduced and spray pattern was also changed slightly. Results of PLIF imaging show that better evaporation property enhances the homogeneity of spray.
