A Novel Method for Identifying Permanent Fault Based on Calculation of Secondary Arc Current on Transmission Lines

PTs are installed on the buses for the protection of conterminous HV transmission line in some situations. Under this condition, Terminal voltage of the isolated phase conductor, which is used by tradition methods for adaptive single-pole reclosure, cannot be obtained when a single-phase-to-ground fault occurs on the line. Only using voltages and currents on sound phases, a algorithm for calculating secondary arc current is put forward. Based on its results a criterion is proposed to distinguish between transient and permanent faults no matter where PTs are installed, especially suitable for the adaptive single-pole reclosure applied on transmission line whose terminal voltage of isolated phase conductor is unavailable. A lot of simulation results show the method is correct and reliable even though there are some errors existing on line parameter and fault location result.
