Developing a Generation Planning Model of the Chinese Power Grids for the Assessment of CDM Activities

A generation planning model of the Chinese six major power grids is being developed in order to evaluate the baseline emissions of carbon dioxide and air pollutants (sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides) as well as the amount of emission credits supplied from potential CDM activities investing in the advanced electricity generation technologies. In the first place, the shapes of annual load duration curves in the six major power grids are estimated in reference to the year 2006. They are constructed based on published data including monthly generation and sales of electricity, monthly peak demand, mean daily load factor, and the representative shapes of daily load curves for the six major power grids. In the second place, database is developed about the performance and economics of power generation technologies as well as their environmental performance and their existing and planned capacities. The power generation planning model is an ordinary linear programming model developed using GAMS. The models time frame is from the year 2006 to the year 2026. The emissions of carbon dioxide and air pollutants by electricity generation up to the year 2026 as well as the potential emission reduction expected from the introduction of cutting-edge power plants are discussed.
