Centralized Backup Protection System Based on Direction Comparison Principle
In the case of the wide area information available, a new relay configuration scheme that is the existing main protection with centralized back-up protection is proposed from the point view of simplifying the configuration and settings cooperation of the existing relay protection system. Centralized Back-up Protection System (CBPS) collects the local information including current and voltage signal, status information of circuit breakers ,operating signal of main protection and receives the status information from adjacent substations. It can easily achieve the following functions: providing quick local backup protection when the main protection fails; tripping the adjacent circuit breaks of the failing circuit breaker when the circuit breaker fails to trip and clearing the fault in minimum range; providing remote backup protection when DC source interrupts in the adjacent substation. Direction comparison principle is used for the implementation of CBPS. When a fault occurs within the protected zone, fault judgement matrix is formed based on the topological connection relations of equipments, the position of the directional elements and their outputs. CPBS can locate the fault after operation based on the fault judgement matrix and make a reasonable trip strategy. The results of case studies show that the proposed protection algorithm can accurately achieve the abovementioned functions and have good adaptability to one direction element fails to operate.
