A Novel Earth Fault Detection based on controllable Petersen coil

The paper discusses the characteristic of single phase fault in Petersen-coil grounded distribution grid, analyzes the zero sequence voltage and currents of the Petersen-coil, fault point, fault feeder and sound feeders, and studies characteristic of the derivatives of the zero sequence currents of the feeders. The paper educes an important theory that only fault feeder’s zero sequence current changes with the inductance of Petersen coil. When a single fault occurs and the Petersen coil inductance changes suddenly, the zero sequence current of the fault feeder changes quickly too, but those of the others will keep nearly invariable. The novel single fault detecting technique is that the derivative of zero sequence current of the fault feeder is the maximum and far higher than other feeders. Controllable Petersen coil is designed to cooperate with the detection technique, so electric arc can extinguish quickly, meanwhile the fault feeder can be detected reliably. The equivalent earth capacitances of the grid can be measured on line in advance, so the Petersen coil inductance can be tuned to be in a whole resonance with the equivalent earth capacitances of the grid. The paper sets up a simulating model of a Petersen coil grounded grid, the exactness, availability and sensitivity of the technique is proved by simulating tests.
