A Study on Voltage Control of Distribution System Using Customer-Side Energy Storage System

In recent years, small-scale distributed generators and energy storage systems have increased to connect in distribution network due to one of the solution of the problems of global warming and exhaustion of fossil fuels. Incidentally, it is important to maintain distribution voltage for electric utility. Since fluctuations of supply voltage would provide some damages to electric equipments and devices, distribution voltage should be maintained within the small ranges. Therefore, electric utility control distribution voltage by installing such voltage control equipments as SVC (Static Var Compensator), and LDC (Line Drop Compensator) in the distribution network. On the other hand, small scale energy storage systems installed practically in distribution system can operate to control the distribution voltage. In this study, the authors propose a cooperation system between a customer installed energy storage systems and electric utility, and a solution method to find the optimal enlarged kWh capcity of the energy storage system so as to maximize both benefits of customer and utility. Through computer simulation, this paper evaluates the economical merits of the proposed cooperation system.
