Improvement of Distance Relay Performance During Voltage Instability Conditions

In this paper, based on local measurements, an improved algorithm to prevent undesirable operations of distance relays during voltage instability conditions is proposed. Undesired (zone 3) distance relay operations have contributed to voltage collapses worldwide. These protective relays may operate undesirably not because of faults as designed but because of overloads during voltage instability. Some indices have been proposed to enable distance relays to distinguish between short circuit faults and voltage instability conditions. These indices may fail under special conditions or need to data from whole or a part of system. The here proposed index is based on two local consecutive voltage- and current-phasor measurements to detect the voltage instability at the relay installation point. The proposed index is precisely simulated for a 14-bus test system. The simulation shows that applicant of proposed approach enables the distance protection relay to clearly distinguish between normal and voltage instability conditions.
