Flexible Measures to Depress Switching Overvoltage in UHV Transmission System

Concept of flexible measures was put forward to depress the switching over-voltage, on the basis of insistent demand of the UHV transmission system to depress switching over-voltage deeply and shortcomings of the existing measures on both economics and operation reliabilities. Working mechanism of the controlled metal oxide arrester (CMOA, shortly) was mainly discussed. Effect of CMOA on depressing the switching over-voltage could be demonstrated by the pilot UHV AC experimental project being built in China. The results indicated that CMOA was very useful. It could depress the maximum phase-to-ground switching over-voltage to 1.6 p.u., even with circuit breakers without closing resistors. Study on the flexible measures to depress the switching over-voltage has both academic and engineering values in the UHV transmission system, needing lots of extremely careful and diligent work.
