Hilbert-Huang Transform Based Fault Location for Transmission Line
Identification and detection of faults generated traveling wave are very important for power grid traveling wave based faults location. The paper presents a new transmission line fault location principle using Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT). The intrinsic mode function (IMF) components of traveling wave are extracted by using empirical mode decomposition (EMD), and the instantaneous frequency changing time of each IMF component is obtained through Hilbert transform. The arrival time of traveling wave can be detected by its high frequency sudden change point which is extracted in the instantaneous frequency diagram. The HHT based fault location scheme is comparing with that based on Wavelet Transform, the result is unique, and the calculation parameters are fixed. The fault location scheme is simulated with ATP software. Results show that the HHT method can more effectively extract the characteristics of traveling wave, and the location accuracy is little affected by fault positions, fault types and grounding resistances. The fault distance error is no more than ±150m.
