Technology Developments on 11kV Rural Supply Network of CLP Power

Distribution overhead lines are vulnerable to natural interferences such as lightning, thunderstorm, vegetation, and wild animals. In the past few years, CLP Power launched a number of innovative technical solutions to avoid or reduce the impacts of these interferences to the 11kV overhead lines, including the installation of 11kV gapped type line arresters, remote fault passage indicators, automatic pole-mounted switches, covered conductors, insulated tubes and bird repellent devices. Full consideration of the overhead line design is taken to blend in with the natural and built environment of Hong Kong rural areas. With years of experience in the fields, these improvement measures are proven to be effective and CLP Power has achieved the dual purposes of enhancing the reliability performance of the supply to our customers and working in harmony with the neighborhood. This paper summarizes the design, development, implementation and reviews the effectiveness of these initiatives in CLP Power.
