Application of Genetic Algorithm on Reliability Centered Maintenance of Transmission System

In deregulated power market, Transmission companies not only decrease their operation costs, but also take opportunities to maximize their profit. On the other hand, they should operate to meet customer needs for reliability which is an important factor of power delivery. In this respect, they need to make the maintenance strategies considering the tradeoff between cost and reliability. For finding the optimal maintenance strategy in transmission system, inspection frequency, a kind of equipment, a state of equipment and effects of equipment failure to the system are considered. This paper presents the equipment state modeling through modified semi-Markov chain that defines deterioration stages by characteristics of equipment. Besides, effects of equipment failure on the system are presented in terms of a cost using the DC-OPF(Optimal Power Flow). The paper includes test results using GA(Genetic Algorithm) on the IEEE 9- bus system. Results are the optimal maintenance strategy which minimizes operation costs.
