Minimization of Interrupted Power by Optimal Power Flow Control with UPFCs and Batteries

Our study aims at minimization of power not supplied (PNS) under the severe fault condition such as tripping of multiple transmission lines. This paper proposes a new control method based on multiple optimal power flow (OPF) calculations by which unified power flow controllers (UPFCs), battery energy storage systems (BESSs), generators and loads are controlled coordinately for PNS minimizing after the fault. Digital simulations are carried out with a meshed test power system. Several simulation cases, with and without UPFCs and batteries, are compared to verify the effect of UPFCs and BESSs on PNS reduction and the results show that reduction of PNS can be accomplished by controlling UPFCs and BESSs by the proposed method. Furthermore, it is made clear that the multiple OPFs, which consider the priority loads to be shed, are very effective on reduction of total PNS.
