HVDC Controller Design for Damping of Interarea Oscillation Using Synchronized Phasor Measurements and Bacteria Foraging Algorithm

This paper proposes a scheme for designing HVDC supplementary damping controller, which takes advantage of all techniques including synchronized phasor measurement, FFT filter and global optimization. The controller is designed to add damping to interarea oscillation in an AC/DC interconnected power system. A simplified oscillation model, which describes the characteristics of single oscillation mode, is derived only using phasor measurements. In this step, the single mode oscillation data extracting technique based on FFT filter is also introduced. Based on identified state matrix of second-order oscillation model, both the characteristics of interested oscillation mode and the effects of HVDC controller can be evaluated. Finally, the bacteria foraging algorithm (BFA) is used to search for optimal parameter settings of the designed controller in order to achieve given damping performance index. The simulation examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed design scheme. The overall performance of optimal parameter settings is also investigated by considering small- as well as large-signal responses.
