An Overview of Earthquake Mitigation of Urban Power Systems
This paper reviews the responses of power systems to earthquakes by comparing two major earthquakes, Tangshan in 1976 and Hanshin in 1995. From the comparison, the importance of risk preparedness is emphasized. The key elements to mitigate earthquake risks upon urban power systems will be then summarised by reviewing successful experiences. The major research efforts since Tangshan earthquake will be also reviewed. It is envisioned that new technologies, such as satellite and remote sensing, will play an important role in the risk mitigation, especially for the preparedness, disaster rescue and recovery in a complicated environment. The information given in this paper is believed to be critical to the earthquake preparedness, especially after the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008.
