Determination of Generator Active Power Output Limit by Stability Sensitivity Index

Transient stability analysis is central to maintain the integrity of electrical power system operation and planning. Trajectory analysis method is an effective approach for evaluating the power system transient stability by stable/unstable indices based on the individual machine trajectory. The foundation of modern measurement system can provide vast measured trajectories which embody system dynamic characteristics. Trajectory sensitivities provide a way of quantifying the variation of trajectory resulting from (small) changes of parameters and/or initial condition which can enlarge the characteristic of trajectory in parameter space. The sensitivity of stable index with respect to some key parameters will be useful for control strategy making in power system operation. A trajectory sensitivity based algorithm for calculating the sensitivity of stable index has been proposed in this paper. An approach for assessment of maximal active power output is developed based on transient stability index sensitivity. This method has been applied to calculate generator active power output limit in multi-machine power system. The test results have been shown that the proposed method is achieving satisfactory results when compared with the simulation counterparts.
