Analysis Method on Frequency Characteristics of Power System Oscillations in Phasor Measurement Data

Open access and deregulation have been introduced in Japan and some independent power producers (IPP) and power producer and suppliers (PPS) are participating in the power generation business, which is possible to makes power system dynamics more complex. To maintain power system condition under various situations, it is essential that a real time measurement system over wide area is available. Therefore we started a project to construct original measurement system between universities in Japan by the use of phasor measurement units (PMU). This paper describes the extraction method of power system oscillations by composing a center of inertia. By the use of this method, various power system oscillations are clarified. Moreover, a stability of detected oscillations occurring in western Japan 60 Hz system is shown. These results show the great potential of this technology to improve grid stability and outage avoidance, system analysis and modeling, and congestion management.
