A Study on the Interrelation between the Damping Loads and the Harmonic Resonance

Power system restoration following a massive or complete blackout starts with energizing primary restorative transmission systems. During this primary restoration process, unexpected over-voltage may happen due to nonlinear interaction between the unloaded transformers and the transmission lines. This is known as the harmonic resonance phenomenon. Since the harmonic resonance originates from the nonlinear characteristics, it is very difficult to predict the occurrence of this phenomenon. The widely used method for prevention of harmonic resonance is energizing the transformer with damping loads. In this paper, the interrelation between harmonic resonance and variation of line length is investigated using PSCAD/EMTDC simulations for the KEPCO primary restorative transmission line which has possibility of occurrence of harmonic resonance. Simulation result showed slightly conflictive results that had been suggested by IEEE Working Group Report..
