Reliability Evaluation for the Series Compensation Installation Based on Stochastic Simulation

Along with considerable benefits of series compensation (SC), such as the transmission capacity improvement, the system stability enhancement, etc. the SC installation also results in negative influences due to its forced outage events. Based on Monte Carlo simulation, a comprehensive algorithm is developed for the reliability evaluation of SC installation. The stochastic states of the SC installation, sampled by Monte Carlo simulation, are analyzed and the reliability indices of SC installation are obtained. In addition, the sensitive analysis is adopted to determine the key factors that determine the reliability level of the SC installation. Hence, it is possible to find the optimal solution to improve the reliability indices of SC installation, i.e. the optimal compromise between reliability indices and costs. Case study is provided in this paper, and the results show that the proposed algorithm is feasible for the reliability evaluation and design of SC installation.
