Transmission Network Support Using VSC-based HVDC Systems
This paper investigates the use of VSC based HVDC system for transmission network support, e.g. frequency support, power system stabilization etc. Although HVDC connection can isolate network disturbances on one side from directly affecting the other side, the positive reaction to network disturbance by conventional synchronous generators could also be lost., Due to its flexible active/reactive power control, a VSC-HVDC can potentially provide useful support to the connected transmission network. Active power injection in the event of sudden power changes can reduce the frequency variation, and the power oscillations can be damped by reactive power modulation. The control strategy of the VSC-HVDC for the transmission network frequency regulation and power damping is proposed, and validated by the simulation studies using MATLAB/Simulink. With the proposed strategy, the VSC-HVDC system can provide useful network support similar to a conventional power plant, thereby improving the power system operation and reliability.
