The Research of Precision Time Protocol IEEE1588
IEEE1588, also known as PTP (Precision Time Protocol), is the newest precision clock synchronization protocol published by IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society in 2002, according to which IEC published IEC61588 in 2004. Its good performances attract many people’s attention, which are distributed localization network, microsecond to submicrosecond accuracy, administration free and compatibility for both high-end devices and low-cost, low-end devices. The time synchronization is one of the important components of support network of the Power System Communications, so we should follow and study the newest technology, including IEEE1588 and especially the application of the technology in Ethernet. The paper points out the advantage of IEEE1588 at first, comparing with the traditional and widely applied method of time synchronization in Power Station, such as IRIGB, GPS, and NTP. Subsequently, here explains the core algorithms of the IEEE1588: the BMC (Best Master Clock) algorithm and the LCS (Local Clock Synchronization) algorithm. And then the paper points out the limitations of IEEE1588, which is the invalidation of protocol’s assumptions in the actual Power production process, that the round delay between master and slave is symmetrical and no fluctuation in Ethernet. For the limitations, the paper proposes the solution, which is filtering the delay’s fluctuation by digital signal processing. At last, paper describes the experiment of the solution in lab, and gives the results, which proves the better accuracy of IEEE1588.
