Research on Optimization of Process Bus in IEC 61850-Based Substation Communication Network
The standard IEC 61850 for communication in substations available since 2005 is increasingly used for Substation Automation Systems (SAS). Current mainstream communication technologies are employed by IEC 61850 such as switched Ethernet and TCP/IP. However, with the growing amount of IEDs in one collision domain, the risk to violate the transmission time requirement increases. This raises the question for optimization of IEC 61850-Based substation communication network. This paper introduces research methods of both hardware experiment and software simulation for performance evaluation of the communication network. With these evaluation methods, we tested the performance of process bus only with Sampled Value (SV) and obtained the maximum number of IEDs in one collision domain in various conditions.
