Realization of the Directional Element Based on Positive Sequence Current’s Fault Component and its Application in Distributed Power System

Once a distributed power connects to the radial distributed system, a change in the structure of the network topology will take place. In order to guarantee the correct operation of the protection device in the double-ended source network, the directional element is required1-4. In this paper, an algorithm for fault direction estimation in a radial distributed system by using phase change in positive sequence current is presented through the analysis of the characteristic of the fault current in the case of DG connecting to the system. Then the performance of the algorithm under the circumstances that distributed power has connected to or exited the system are tested through PSCAD/EMTDC simulation. The test results indicate that the phase change of the positive sequence current contains information about the location of the fault. In addition, it has demonstrated that the directional element based on the algorithm has good stability and high reliability, more importantly, with no ‘voltage dead zone’ existing.
