Study on Application of Fixed Speed Synchronous Generator for Wind Power Generation
Many types of wind power generation are applied in the field. Typical generators are conventional squirrel cage induction generator in fixed speed operation. A conventional synchronous generator in fixed speed operation is not applied in actual field. The reason is estimated that there is a possibility of loss of synchronism. But the synchronous generator has advantage compared with induction generator in viewpoint of terminal voltage control. This paper treats the conventional synchronous generator with voltage controller in fixed speed operation, and makes study for finding possibility as wind power generator. Simulations with actually measured wind velocity are carried out and limits of stable operation are analyzed. The results are discussed in this paper that the synchronous generator can maintain bus voltage very well compared to the induction generator in normal operation. And at system fault if voltage drop is less than 50%, the synchronous generator maintains its operation without loss of synchronism.
