Improvement in the Performance of an MHD Electrical Power Generator with Contoured Channel Walls

The improvement in the performance, especially the isentropic efficiency, of an MHD generator with contoured channel walls, in comparison with a generator with straight channel walls, has been attempted in the experimental approach, based on the numerical prediction. The power generation experiments with a shock-tunnel facility mainly consisting of a disk MHD generator and a superconducting magnet shows the advantageous feature in the generator with contoured channel walls, as predicted in the numerical simulation. Thus, the boundary layer separation is avoided, and high Mach number - low static pressure plasma is realized even under high enthalpy extraction or high MHD interaction conditions, unlike the generator with straight channel walls. This situation is surely fruitful for the increase in the Hall parameter and the electrical efficiency, which leads the improvement in the isentropic efficiency of the MHD generator.
