Suppression of Fluctuation in Wind Power Generation Output by Controlling Distributed Generator
The installed capacity of wind power generation (WG) has been increasing in many countries. However, the power output of WG fluctuates within the short period depending on the wind speed; therefore, the frequency of electric power systems may be disturbed. Then, some energy storage systems such as batteries should be equipped for suppressing the fluctuations in WG output. However, the initial cost of energy storage system is still expensive and prevents from promoting further installation of WG. The authors have investigated the potential of the controllable distributed generator (CDG) such as biomass gas turbine generator as an alternative to the energy storage system. This paper presents a control method of CDG for suppressing the fluctuation in WG output. Since the dynamic response of CDG is slower than that of the battery, CDG may not be able to follow severe wind power variations. Therefore, in the proposed method, residual control error of CDG can be compensated by the battery with fast dynamic response. By combining CDG and battery, the capacity of battery required for suppressing the fluctuations of WG can be reduced and total cost composed of the CDG and battery can be decreased than the case controlled only by battery.
