Ozone Production Characteristics Including Ozone-Zero Phenomena In Pure Oxygen

A needle-to-plate electrode was used as a first type of ozone generator in pure oxygen (99.6 %). The gap distance was 1.94 mm and the discharge current was fixed at 1 μ A for the measurement of the ozone concentration with a long time operation. The initial ozone concentration of about (2.0-3.0) ppm was measured at the first stage and this concentration finally decreased to about 0.2 ppm. After the drastically decrease of ozone concentration was observed, the nitrogen gas was added in the reactor and its addition effect on ozone generation was measured in detail. A rotating electrode type of ozone generator was also used as a second reactor. The discharge gap distance was 1.1 mm and the discharge length along the reactor was 100 mm. Both the diameter and length of the inner rotating electrode were 10 mm and 100 mm respectively. The rotating speed was 0-800 rpm. The different material of electrode such as a gold-coated electrode on the copper, a copper electrode and a brass electrode for the rotating electrode was used to study on the ozone production. The merit to use the goldcoated electrode was confirmed on the ozone production compared with the other two cases and the ozone-zero phenomena were also observed. Using this reactor a long time operation for the ozone production has been examined. The expanded metal was inserted between electrodes in the third reactor and one of them was attached with a dielectric material. The addition effect of nitrogen gas on the ozone production was confirmed and it was measured in detail to change the nitrogen percent and discharge condition (i.e. with discharge or without discharge).
