Applicability of Approximation Method for Payback Period of Fuel Cell Auxiliary Power Units for Large Trucks
Many commercial trucks idle its engine to supply electrical power during a stop with very low efficiency. Fuel cell auxiliary power units have 30-40 percents energy efficiency and are expected to greatly reduce pollutant emissions and diesel oil usage and therefore to save cost. We discussed the payback period, the reduction of fuel cost, and the pollutant emission under the present condition in Japan. The estimation of the payback period is based on the model proposed by C. J. Brodrick et al. Transport Res. Part D-Transport. Environ., vol. 7, p.p. 303- 315, 2002, in which the payback period is determined to be the year when the net present value of the FC-APU reaches zero. Since the calculation is complex because of its iteration and variety of the parameters, we have proposed an approximation method of the payback period IEEJ Trans. D, vol. 129, no. 2, p.p. 228-229, 2009. Though the results have shown both the approximation and the exact solution are in good agreement for typical parameters, the applicability of the approximation for changed in parameters has not discussed. In the present study, the applicability of the approximation method is discussed when the parameters that are sensitive to the net present value (or payback period) are changed, e. g. diesel fuel cost, the diesel fuel inflation rate, the general inflation rate, and the discount rate. The estimation provides that the error is the range of 5.1 to 0.6 percents. This result and the other ones show that the error of the approximation method does not exceed 10 percent in the condition that the payback time is less than 10 years at least. Therefore our proposed approximation method for a payback period may be applicable.
