The Feasibility Study of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Auxiliary Power Units for Refrigerator Cars

We have measured the dependence of energy efficiency of a PEMFC (proton-exchange membrane fuel cell, 1.2kW) system on an electrical load, which shows the maximum energy efficiency, 44.7% is obtained at 20% of a full load. However, the run of a FC-APU at a 20% load would increase in an initial cost of a FC-APU because of the increase in a rated power and make the payback period longer. Based on the measured data, we estimate the payback period, the reduction of fuel cost and pollutant emissions when using a FC-APU for refrigerator cars. The results predict that the payback period would be 3.4 years when a FC-APU runs at a full load. On the other hand it would be more than 7 years at a 20% load although it would reduce about 276,000 (¥/year) for fuel cost, 8.3 (t/year) of CO2 and 0.038 (t/year) of NOX.
