Quantitative Analysis of CO2-Emission Reduction by Battery Energy Storage System

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) is attracting attention all over the world. NAS Battery (Sodium and Sulfur) battery is one of the most promising BESSs, and it has been widely used in Japan. The advantage of introduction of BESSs is not limited to power quality and load leveling. BESSs will be an effective countermeasure against global warming. Although the mechanisms of BESS’s contribution are not simple, the emission control by load leveling is mainly discussed in this paper. BESSs charge the energy that is produced by clean generators at night, and discharge the energy in the daytime when the demand is high. This function definitely promotes to utilize less-CO2-emission and less-expensive generators. In this paper, the reduction of CO2- emission and the operation cost of generators are calculated using the simple commitment model called “Screening method. The effects of BESSs are quantitatively evaluated as the annual operating cost and annual CO2-emission.
