Optimization of Electric Railway Power System for Upgraded Train Operation

Seoul subway line 2 is controlled by ATS (Automatic Train Stop) systems which make trains stop in the emergency condition to ensure the safety of train. They are worn out for long time service, and are replaced with ATC(Automatic Train Control)system recently. When ATC system is fully installed, it is estimated that headway will be reduced to 120 seconds, compared with 150 seconds of ATS operation. Power supply system of the subway line 2 will face lack of power capacity to supply the trains when headway will be reduced to 120seconds from 150 seconds by replacing ATS with ATC. The authors reviewed the lack of power capacity when the train control system is upgraded, in terms of of the past power demand data. A simulation-based(EW-JUMPS) approach is provided to calculate an adequate power supply capacity when the train operation condition is changed.
