Detection and Analysis of Partial Discharge on Cast Resin Insulation System

Dry type transformers which are usually insulated by epoxy cast resin are widely used in 22.9kV distribution class. However when the types of transformer are exposed to a defect resulting from electrical and mechanical stress, insulation breakdown is easy to occur due to the absence of self-healing effects. One of the most well known destructive phenomena is partial discharge (PD). In this paper, we described the detection and analysis of partial discharge on cast resin insulation system to apply to the insulation diagnose of dry type transformers. Various defects; needle to needle, needle to plane, plane to plane and surface discharge were assembled to simulate PD in cast resin insulation system. A low-noise amplifier with the gain of 40dB in ranges of 500kHz ~ 30MHz (-3dB) was designed and fabricated to detect small signals. The magnitude, phase, and patterns of PD pulse depending on defects were analyzed in time and frequency domain by using a data acquisition system. We expected that the experimental results are useful for the insulation diagnosis of cast resin insulation system.
