FLOOD FORECASTING SYSTEM IN KARUN RIVER:EXPERIENCES,BENEFITS AND DEFICITS
Karun river in the south west of IRAN has accommodated most of the large dams and hydropower plants in the country. An advance early flood forecasting system was accomplished in 2006 after the second breach of Karun 4 cofferdam in the catchments. The established flood forecasting system is based on numerical weather forecast and hydrological modeling which provide lead-time of about 5 days in forecasting the floods with acceptable accuracy.Under operation hydropower dams including Karun3,Karunl, and Dez with total volume of 7000 MCM provide adequate flood control volume to attenuate peak discharge of floods.Practical application of early flood forecasting system showed the forecasting errors between 3%to 20%for different floods during 2007.Only in a single flood, marginal benefit of power generation in Karun3 was about 200,000 US$per day in comparison with without forecasting situation.
