THE STATE OF POWER:A TASMANIAN PERSPECTIVE

Hydro Tasmania,a Tasmanian state government business enterprise,is Australia’s leading renewable energy business, contributing 50%of Australia’s re.renewably generated electricity and the majority of the electricity for the island state of Tasmania.Hydro Tasmania has a proud 100 year history in power engineering and dam construction and is now predominately in an asset management phase of business, with the last major hydroelectric power scheme completed in 1994.There arc currently a number of challenges facing Hydro Tasmania including reduced inflows from below average rainfall,an aging asset portfolio, and resource constraints. This discussion paper will detail Hydro Tasmania’s 2.615 MW portfolio;examine the challenges of running an aging system in a drought;describe the changes in asset management being utilised to manage the effects of climate change;and report on renewable energy research being conducted by the University of Tasmania and implemented by Hydro Tasmania.
