A REAL TIME DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM(DSS)FOR THE MHLATHUZE RIVER SYSTEM

A near real time DSS has been developed to reduce apparent operational water losses and assist with the overall management of water resources in the Mhlathuze River Catchment. The DSS framework will utilize near real time observed rainfall, gauging flow and reservoir level data, together with forecasted rainfall information,to provide operational management information in both short and long term. The NAM rainfall-runoff model is used to provide an estimation of catchment runoff up to one week in advance.Current water orders from users in the catchment are then combined with the runoff data to calculate the most appropriate release from the Goedertrouw Dam.The Mike Basin model is also utilized to assess the impact of different operational decisions on water resources in the longer term. The Mike Floodwatch modeling framework is used to communicate pertinent information with stakeholders via website.SMS and e-mail publications. The paper presents the modeling framework.calculation procedures and model verification results involved in the development of the DSS.
