DAM HEEL CRACKING AND ITS ANTISEEPAGE MEASURES OF HIGH ARCH DAMS

This paper collect some high arch dams their dam heel cracked in operation at first, such as SayanoShushenskaya arch dam (Russia), Kolnbrein arch dam (Austria), Schlegeis arch dam (Austria), Zillergrundl arch dam (Austria) and Simen arch dam (China). From high arch dams mentioned above, a conclusion can be made that dam heel cracking of high arch dams can not be avoided without doubt, especially of high arch dams constructed in broad river valley. Practical experiences on high arch dams in China and other countries show that the heel of high arch dams is liable to crack and the cracks at the dam heel may propagate due to hydraulic fracturing under high water pressure. This can decrease safety of high arch dams.
