ACCESS TO IRRIGATION AND FOOD SECURITY:CASES FROM SOME SELECTED AREAS OF BANGLADESH
Boro paddy production fully depends on irrigation, mainly on groundwater and shallow tubewell(STW)is the main irrigation device in Bangladesh. To identify the factors influencing irrigation facilities which ensure the food security of the households,is the goal of this study. In total 100 Boro paddy producers from 5 villages (Saitapara,Shekhsimul,Kagmaribeltail,Kurmushi and Kaizalipur)of Ghatail upazila under Tangail district as 20 from each village were selected randomly to collect the data.Around 77 percent lands were used for Boro production in the study areas.Only 4 percent areas were waterbody while the rest(19 percent)captured by the settlement areas.Per hectare yield of Boro paddy under diesel and electricity operated STWs were 6908 kg and 6508 kg,respectively.Average yield difference among farmers under diesel and electricity STWs was 1498 kg per hectare. There was no significant impact of education of the farmers for variation of Boro yields while access to irrigation created the yield differences of Boro paddy.Per household production of Boro paddy was 2085 quintal which ensured their household security of cereal foods and the farmers sold a quite good amount (household surplus)of Boro paddy to meet the requirement of non-farm households of the country.Though,a little profit differences among households were found but the differences were not statistically significant. The mauzas where electricity supply was available, the farmers of these mauzas were in trouble from irregular power supply and they had less access to groundwater irrigation which made yield differences of the plot under diesel operated STWs.As a result of this, the farmers under diesel operated STWs got higher profit and yield than the farmers of that mauzas out of electricity.Only ensured electricity supply easily boosts up 325 kg yield from per hectare of land, which obviously reduces the household vulnerability and increases food security.
