STUDY ON STRATEGY FOR GRAIN SECURITY AND IRRIGATION DEVELOPMENT IN CHINA
In accordance with the Outline for Food and Nutrient Development in China issued by the State Council, the grain security in China could not be met until the per capita grain production reach 400, 415 and 420 kg per year respectively by year 2000, 2010 and 2020. As the most populous country of the world, grain security in China is of great significance not only to guarantying Chinas national economic sustainability and social stability, but also playing an important role in guarantying the worlds grain security and stabilizing the worlds grain market. There have a great concern over Chinas grain security from international and domestic scientists and politicians. It is predicted that Chinas population will peak to 1.6 billion by around year 2030. This huge population number will inevitably increase the grain requirement. In the mean time, with the rapid economic development and improvement of peoples living standard in China, the increase of meat consumption will also drive the increase of grain requirement.
