MULTIPOND SYSTEM-A SUSTAINABLE WAY TO INCREASE WATER SUPPLIES FOR AGRICULTURE
Water shortage often OCCURS from uneven rainfall distribution that results in significant gaps between rain events and crop water requirement.Multipond system,as an ancient invention in China, harvests excess rainwater through the ponds scattered in the watershed during the wet season and use the conserved water for crop production.A case study of a multipond system in Liuchahe was conducted to quantify its influence on water resources.Influence of the multipond system on water resources for crop production was depended on crop water requirement.surface runoff, precipitation and pond storage capacity. In the experimental watershed of 6.9 km2,the multipond system, with a storage capacity of 6.72× 105m3,could effectively influence water resources over both temporal and spatial scale. The runoff intercepted by the ponds is estimated to be 277 mm in a normal year,239 mm in a wet year, and 195 mm in a dry year, where the corresponding annual precipitation is 915 mm,1796 mm,and 658 mm.respectively.The use of a multipond system is a sustainable way to recycle water resources and increase crop production.
