THE INFLUENCE OF FLOOD AND DROUGHT DISASTERS ON GRAIN PRODUCTION IN THE HUAIHE REVER BASIN OF ANHUI PROVINCE

As a major province of grain production, the annual yield of grain, cotton and oil of Anhui Province was 2.65×1010kg, 3.5×108kg, 2.8×109kg, and ranked the sixth, fourth, sixth place of national yield, respectively. The Huaihe River Basin (HRB) of Anhui Province has a basin area of 67,000km2, a cultivated area of 2.8×106ha and a population of 3.8×107. In this area the agricultural production is dominated by planting and the main agricultural productions include wheat, rice, corn, soybean, potatoes, rape, sorghum and cotton. The crops planting area of this area is 5.6×106ha with a cropping index of 1.9, and the grain crops planting area is 4.13×106ha with a grain yield about 1.85×1010kg/a (statistic date of 1990 to 2004).
