ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WATER REQUIREMENT OVER THE EAST RIVER(DONGJIANG)DELTA
Nowadays societal interest in river ecosystem restoration for supporting ecosystem health is growing rapidly around the world. The aim of this paper was to investigate the ecological and environmental water requirements over the East River delta, and provide water managers with environmental flow recommendations.Ecological and enviromental water requirements are divided into instream and outstream water requirements. The total instream water requirement should be the minimum stream flow to satisfy river functions, such as basic ecological water requirement, water purification, water discharge into the sea,and navigation.Thereby the minimum instream water requirement over the East River delta is 210m3/s in the dry season, and 29 1.8 m3/s for the wet season. The East River is the main fresh water sources for Hong Kong, Shenzhen,Dongguan,Huizhou,Guangzhou. The total pumping rate from the East River, that is, the outstream water requirement,is about 200m3/s.Thereby the ecological and enviromental water requirement is 410m3/s for the dry season.and 491.8 m3/s for the wet season over che East River delta.Since the stream flow in the dry season can not meet the water requisition well, alternative water resources management strategy, such as alternative water functions, reservior regulation, underground water resources exploitation, reuse of waste water, and utilization of sea water, should be adopted.
