Successfully Commercializing Innovation-Based Start-Ups
This paper will examine the challenges of identifying and successfully commercializing research and technology-based start-ups. At the heart of the Finnish innovation system are knowledge-based techno-entrepreneurs in the pre-incubation to early growth phase of their development into international corporations. The challenge facing these entrepreneurs is to evolve successfully into Born Global success stories despite: · Weak management & communication skills · Weak client & partner networks · Challenges to raise adequate affordable capital · A lack of international connections and distribution channels For the business developer whose clients are techno-entrepreneurs the challenge is to provide services and processes that support the efficient discovery, development and success of innovation-based start-ups in close collaboration with the other players in the innovation system value chain. In practice we must be able to: · Identify, screen, prepare and kick-off high potential Born Global start-ups · Enable entrepreneurs to effectively create, communicate and implement internationally competitive business plans and processes · Connect entrepreneurs with customers, partners and affordable sources of capital · Help clients to evaluate and enter international markets The Nature of Born Global Start-Ups The focus of the incubator’s value-added service palette is the Born Global innovation-based start-up company. These are companies that aim to evolve rapidly from start-up to internationalization in 1-3 years. More precisely, we define them as companies with the pre-requisites to reach sales of ? 3-5 million in 2-4 years, with at least 75% of the revenues coming from outside the domestic market. Even though these companies are small in number we believe strongly that they end up generating the bulk of high-tech jobs and revenues. This implies that we must increasingly focus financing and development programs on a smaller number of more ambitious and higher potential “Global Gazelles.
