Technology Business Incubator in China

The technology incubators in China have been rapidly developed and now the number is over 500. The most predominant characteristics of China’s technology business incubators are the strong guidance and support by government and taking the nurturing of high and new technology as the core mission. Therefore, most of China’s incubators are non-profit organizations. The most successful incubators are incubators sponsored by high-tech zones. The investment modes of China’s incubators have evolved from single sponsorship to multi-tier investment modes, which means that investments come not only from governments, but also from universities, research institutes and intermediary organizations, different types of enterprises like state-owned enterprises, private enterprises, foreign invested enterprises, investment companies and publicly listed companies. As one of the advanced production organization means introduced from the West, China’s first technology business incubator was born 18 years ago. With 18 years’ development, the number of incubators has seen rapid development and now reaches over 500, among which there are 108 state level innovation centers approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 45 pioneering parks for overseas Chinese scholars and 58 university science and technology parks. There are 32 incubators, which have 200 incubation enterprises, and 19 incubators, which have over 100 graduation enterprises, and state level incubators account for 98% of these incubators. After 18 years’ development, China’s incubator industry has been in the world’s leading position whether in number or in quality.
