Privacy Concern on “Google Book Plan
Digital reading’s prevalence and development brings a lot of convenience to netizens, but at the same time it causes much concern on privacy infringement. Google, an international giant Internet corporation, launched its “Google Book plan covering both “Google Book Search and “Google Library projects. In Google’s perspective, it is going to create a comprehensive, searchable, virtual card catalog of all books in all languages. However, the important privacy concern caused by Google’s unrestrictedly collecting and storing personal information is not clearly contained in its plan. What’s worse, no privacy protection clause was included in the Google Book Settlement made by Google and various civil groups. All these can be huge crisis for privacy protection. This article introduces “Google Book plan in general, does a background study of Google book settlement, explores and analyzes personally identifiable information (PII) protection in Mainland China. Finally, this article concludes with some suggestions on a comprehensive protection mode of privacy, hopefully to achieve the goal of balancing PII protection and the development of “Google Book plan so as to obtain double wins.
