Ownership Structure and Banking Efficiency in Pakistan
We examine the efficiency of commercial banks operating in Pakistan after the second stage of financial sector reforms. The objective is to investigate the impact of ownership structure on the efficiency of banks. The banks are divided into three ownership types: state owned domestic private and foreign banks. We use DEA to calculate the technical efficiency over a period of 2001 to 2007. The results suggest that foreign banks have been most efficient as compared to their counterparts. State owned banks are slightly better than domestic private banks but the difference in the efficiency of state owned and domestic private banks is not significant. Further it is found that the policy of financial sector reforms and privatization have failed to improve the efficiency of banks. We hypothesize that unfavorable macroeconomic environment and high rate of inflation have caused the reforms to fail in terms of improvement in banking efficiency.
