MECHANISM OF INTERIOR BALLISTIC PEAK PHENOMENON OF GUNS AND ITS EFFECTS
Interior ballistic peak phenomenon is an intrinsic characteristic of certain types of guns. With the number of rounds fired increasing, the muzzle velocity v0 or maximum pressure pm of the kind of guns will increase to their peak values and then decrease gradually until termination of the guns barrel life. The phenomenon brings difficulties to the design and use of the guns. The principle of the phenomenon is studied by test and theoretical analysis. Based on an approximate formula, the engraving pressure p0 proves to change with the erosion and wear of gun barrel, so does the interior ballistic performance. Then the model of the ballistic peak effect is established and the principle and effects of ballistic performance analyzed. It is concluded that the mismatch of the structure and dimensions of the gun bore with that of the projectile driving band is the fundamental cause of the phenomenon.
