THE EFFECTS OF DOUBLE-BASE PROPELLANT AND VENTING ON THE INSENSITIVE MUNITIONS (IM) PROPERTIES OF MEDIUM CALIBER AMMUNTION

As part of an effort to improve the Insensitive Munitions (IM) characteristics of medium caliber ammunition, the US Army RDECOM ARDEC has developed a new environmentally friendly, insensitive propellant, designated PAP-8386. Development of this propellant demonstrated many of the difficulties involved with manufacturing improved propellant solutions for these types of rounds. Despite promising preliminary tests of the material in the M793 cartridge at ambient temperatures, subsequent extreme temperature testing identified an unacceptable pressure rise as the temperature decreased. The extensive investigation into the causes of this phenomenon lead to changes in both the ignition system and the coating employed with the new propellant. Optimizing the ignition system and coating allowed all ballistic goals to be achieved. Now this improved propellant will be paired with a vented case and container in a system level approach to improving the IM response of mediuM caliber ammunition.
