AN INVESTIGATION OF COMBINED ELECTRO-THERMAL AND MECHANICAL EFFECTS ON TRANSITION IN SOLID ARMATURE RAILGUN

Transition mechanisms of solid armature railgun were investigated from the viewpoint of combined electrothermal and mechanical effects. An electromechanical and thermal coupled dynamics model based on lumped parameters, a 3D transient multi-physical field model and shock dynamics model were developed. The magnetic diffusive progress, heat conduct progress, wear and impact progress in railgun were simulated by these models. Some experimental methods were used to measure the electrical, thermal and mechanical processes during launch. The electron temperature of plasma in bore was measured by Boltzmann plot method. Fiber Bragg grating sensor system was used to measure the deformation of barrel during launch. The shape of armature leaving muzzle was measured by a high-speed imaging system and the mass loss was calculate by image reconstruction method. Some preliminary results of modeling and measurements are listed in this paper.
