EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON THE EXPANSION OF TRANSIENT PLASMA JET IN OPEN AIR
The ablation plasma generated by the discharging of pulse power in capillary is widely used in Electrothermal Chemical Gun (ETCG). The studies on the properties of ablation plasma and the expansion process of plasma jet in open air are the virtual issues in the development of ETCG. The pressure profiles of ablation plasma in capillary are measured, and the results indicate that the pressure is determined by the discharge energy. The sequence pictures of the expansion process of plasma jet in open air are recorded by high speed camera system. Due to the transient character of the expansion, two sets of high speed digital camera systems are employed. Firstly, the monochrome pictures of plasma jet expanding in open air under discharge voltage of 2kV~3kV, nozzle diameters of 2.5mm and 3.5mm, and apertures of 5.6~22 are recorded by monochrome high speed camera system with a frame rate of 40500fps. The recording pictures indicate that strong shock wave exists in the boundary of plasma jet, and the wave develops form spherical to ampullaceous gradually. Then, the expansion is recorded by color high speed camera system with frame rate of 20000fps. The axial expanding velocities of plasma jet in open air are calculated according to the displacement of plasma jet and the time-of-flight. The axial expanding velocities are increasing with the increase of discharge voltages and the decrease of nozzle diameter.
