STUDY ON THE UNIMODULAR PROPELLANT CHARGE SYSTEMS FOR LARGE CALIBER GUNS

Unimodular propellant charge systems have many advantages especially for large caliber guns. But it seems very hard to satisfy the very different interior ballistic requirements for top and lower zone charges in such a system by using the same unit modules. The key technology to overcome this difficulty is to effectively control the gas forming rate of all the zone charges, especially the top and the lowest ones. By use of highly progressive multiperforated and desensitized propellant grains and increasing the charge mass, it would be much easier to control the burning surface of the charge grains, to adjust the gas forming rate and the temperature sensitivity of the charge. Several new measures were first introduced in developing the system and were verified the effectiveness by proof ground tests with a 45-23-155mm howitzer. The technology described in this paper is shown to be suitable for a variety of 155mm caliber guns, and has the potential to be applied to the developing of unimodular propellant charge systems for other large caliber guns, such as 122mm and 105mm ones.
